Approx one mile apart stand the town of Matlock and the village of Matlock Bath. They stand on the A6 road which passes down a narrow spectacular limestone gorge under the cable car serving the Heights of Abraham. Matlock is home to the County Council offices. It is a more formal place than it's touristy companion down the road, but is still a charming place to base a stay in the Peak District. In late summer, Matlock Bath Gardens have their illuminations - a charming walk through the gardens alongside the River Derwent. PEAK RAIL Peak Rail is a 4.5 mile stretch of railway line running from Matlock to Rowsley, stopping half way at Darley Dale. Check the Official Peak Rail Web Site for opening dates. Well worth a trip on this train running through beautiful countryside. Trains are licensed and serve snacks. MATLOCK FARM PARK A popular attraction with children is Matlock Farm Park where the kids get to play with, ride on, and feed the animals in this working farm location. There's Pony Trekking by appointment nearby. MATLOCK BATH AQUARIUM At the original Victorian thermal baths at Matlock Bath you will find the Aquarium which also houses the Hologram Gallery, the Petrifying Well and a Gemstone & Fossil Collection. Open Easter to October. PEAK DISTRICT MINING MUSEUM & TEMPLE MINE The pavilion at Matlock Bath house the Mining Museum which is a hands-on visitor attraction showing the life and times of a Derbyshire lead miner. See the tunnels, shafts, cramped working conditions and working systems that were used. Check the Official Peak District Mining Museum Site for more details.
